Calder Inspired Wire Portraits

I have wanted to do this project since seeing Calder's work at the 'Picasso to Warhol' exhibition in 2012 at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.
I am working with a very talented group of Year 6's and 7's and I am loving the results!
My sample
 Hannah - Year 7
 Anshu - Year 7

Jodie - Year 7

Harry - Year 7

  1. Nice work! I saw that same exhibit when it came here to Atlanta last year, and the Calder room was my favorite too.

  3. These are AMAZING! I love them. I am a massive fan of Calder and wire work in general. (I loved seeing the Calder wire portraits at Picasso to Warhol too!)

  4. Hi there,

I was hoping to do something like this with my middle school 3D class. Do you have a recommendation for the type of wire to use or where to buy it?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Tali,
I used armature wire which is great because it is soft and pliable. I was able to order it through my school, but it should be available from most ceramic supply places. Good luck!
